Emergency Dentistry In Saginaw: What To Do Right Now When You Have Tooth Pain, A Broken Tooth, Or A Dental Injury

Dental emergencies always seem to happen at the wrong time. A tooth breaks during dinner. A crown comes off before a trip. You wake up with swelling and a throbbing toothache that was only “mildly annoying” the day before. In those moments, the biggest thing most patients want is clarity. Is this serious? Can it wait? What should I do before I get to the office?

At Eagle Mountain Dentistry, we offer Emergency Dentistry and provide same-day emergency dental care when you need urgent help. Common emergencies we treat include chipped and cracked teeth, knocked-out teeth, toothaches, loose or missing dental work, and soft tissue injuries to the cheeks, lips, and gums.

The First Rule: If It Feels Urgent, Call Us

A good rule of thumb is this: if you are in serious pain, bleeding, or worried something is genuinely wrong, call us. It is much better to contact us and find out it is manageable than to wait and let a problem worsen.

A dental emergency is any condition causing serious oral pain, discomfort, or bleeding. That includes more situations than patients sometimes realize. A severe toothache is not something to “tough out.” A cracked tooth can become much worse if you keep chewing on it. A knocked-out tooth is absolutely time-sensitive.

Common Emergencies We See

Severe Toothaches

A deep, throbbing toothache often means there is significant inflammation or infection inside the tooth. Sometimes that tooth may need Root Canals. Other times, if the damage is too severe, we may need to discuss Extractions. The key is finding out what is causing the pain before it gets worse.

Chipped Or Cracked Teeth

Not every chip is urgent, but some are. If the crack is painful, sharp, deep, or making it hard to bite normally, we want to see it quickly. Depending on the severity, treatment may include smoothing the area, Dental Bonding, or a Dental Crown & Bridge solution.

Knocked-Out Teeth

This is one of the most time-sensitive emergencies we treat. If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown, not the root, and contact us immediately. Same-day emergency care can make a major difference.

Lost Crowns, Fillings, Or Other Dental Work

A lost restoration may not seem dramatic at first, but it can leave the tooth exposed, sensitive, or vulnerable to fracture. Even if pain is not severe yet, the sooner we evaluate it, the better.

Cuts To The Lips, Gums, Or Cheeks

Soft tissue injuries can also qualify as emergencies, especially if bleeding is hard to control or the injury happened alongside damage to the teeth.

What To Do Before You Get To Our Office

The right first step depends on the situation, but here are some general guidelines:

  • For swelling, use a cold compress on the outside of the face
  • For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist and call immediately
  • For a broken tooth, save any pieces you can find
  • For bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze
  • For severe pain, call us rather than trying to self-diagnose

Most importantly, avoid chewing on the injured side and do not ignore swelling, especially if it seems to be spreading.

Why Same-Day Care Matters

With emergencies, timing matters because problems can escalate quickly. A cracked tooth can deepen. An infection can spread. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved when care happens as soon as possible.

That is why we make same-day emergency dentistry a priority. When something unexpected happens, we want to help you get out of pain and move toward a clear treatment plan quickly.

What Happens During An Emergency Visit

Emergency visits are focused on two goals:

  1. Finding the cause of the problem
  2. Relieving pain and stabilizing the tooth or area

That may mean taking X-rays, checking the bite, examining the tooth structure, and talking through what happened. From there, we explain what we are seeing and recommend the next step. Sometimes we can provide definitive treatment that day. Other times, the first priority is getting you comfortable and protecting the area until the next phase of care.

Emergency Treatment May Lead To Restorative Treatment

An emergency appointment is often the beginning of the treatment plan, not the end of it. Depending on what happened, follow-up care may involve:

  • Root Canals
  • Dental Crowns & Bridges
  • Extractions
  • Dental Fillings
  • Dental Implants if a tooth cannot be saved

What matters most is that we walk you through the plan clearly and help you understand your options.

Not Every Emergency Starts Big

Some emergencies begin as mild symptoms that were easy to ignore for a while. A little sensitivity. A small chip. A filling that felt “not quite right.” Then suddenly it turns into swelling, pain, or a bigger fracture.

That is why we always encourage patients to trust their instincts. If something feels off, it is worth calling. Small problems are usually easier to treat than the same problems after they flare up.
